How to Wear Printed Denim This Spring

I got this question and photo from Megan last year.  Although the printed pant she bought isn’t available any more…there are plenty of new options this year….including bold prints, bigger sized graphics, floral prints and coloured denim.  The ‘printed pant’ trend is staying with us for awhile and I like it! It’s a nice change from the basic dark denim that I usually recommend for my clients. So whether you’re a stay at home mom like Megan, looking for a chic casual look, try a patterned jean this spring.  Make sure you get a great fit first, then have fun with colour and an interesting pattern.

I just bought these pants for spring – I really like them but have no idea what to wear with them!  I would love a suggestion or two to help me out!  (I’m a stay at home mom so I’m looking for something casual).

Hi Megan…….thanks for your question….and the super cute pants!  I love them.

I did a post about coloured jeans, and you’ll find that similar rules apply to your pants. Your pants are ‘bold’ and need to be balanced with a top that has some ‘oomph’. My first suggestion would be a red t-shirt or top … simple in cut, not too detailed, but a nice strong colour. If you don’t like red, any other brightly coloured top would be good….fushia, yellow, emerald green. (Do you know which colours look best on you?). Then, you could add a jacket or cardigan to balance the look if you needed to be more polished (a school meeting, or a lunch with friends for instance). I would stick with navy for this option. You can also trade out the flat shoes with a heel, add a clutch…and you’d be ready for a dinner out with friends.

Option # 2…Pair this pant with another patterned top in similar colour tones … definitely a more fashion forward look.   Try a navy and white striped t-shirt with the pants (predominately navy)…this is really cute!

Finally, pair the pants with a simple white top, which would be a more minimal approach.  If you go this route, punch it up a bit with a fun accessory….I’ve used the honeycomb Michael Kors tote bag, but you could also try a coloured shoe, or a statement necklace.
