Onto today’s question:
Thank you for this very comprehensive , fashion and life style newsletter. Combining chic with business wear is a personal dilemma. Very long work days with a wide variety of meetings and hands on work, leads to just a few workable choices. Pants, flats and a great jacket usually. It is difficult to include feminine in the mix. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks for your question! I think you’re definitely on the right track with a simple, clear daily uniform of pants, flats and a great jacket. But to ‘up’ the chic and femininity of your outfits, try a few of these ideas:
-Jackets and Blazers – use colour in a bold way. There are great jackets at every price point available…from hot pink to emerald green to turquoise. Adding a bold accents to basic denim jeans or pants gives your look a lot of chic. Another option would be a bold floral print (see option 2 below)…this is a great year to think about adding a floral cardigan or top to your wardrobe. Keep the lines of the garment clean and simple to keep it suitable for business.
-Blouse – this beautiful white cotton blouse from Vivienne Westwood is feminine, but not too girly. It still has an edge to it because of the boldness of the bow and the ruched sleeves. It’s not too soft or floppy and pairs well with the structure of the blazer.
-Denim – I’m a huge fan of Yoga Jeans…this is a basic dark denim, in a boot cut. The waist is reasonably high, which is great for women over 40. Plus the fabric has a four-way stretch and is super comfortable for those long business meetings.
-Pointy-toed flat – Look for a great flat with a pointy toe to add a bit more femininity to your outfits. This shoe will also look great with a capri pant or even a full skirt.
